Introduction

Ayushman Bharat, the Indian government's flagship programme, resonates with the 2017 National Health Policy. This initiative promotes Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and ensures comprehensive primary health care for all, as envisaged in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This policy's primary objective or aim is to achieve “no one left behind,” where underprivileged individuals are provided with quality healthcare and financial protections.

Overview of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, whose implementation began in September 2018 by the Government of India, is a radical shift from the conventional sector-based healthcare systems. Instead, it focuses on a holistic healthcare system that is more inclusive and demand driven. This project aimed to provide monetary security for medical services and ensure that poor people could access quality healthcare. It has a range of outpatient, secondary, tertiary and primary medical interventions.

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana is structured around two main components:

1. Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY): This component provides financial coverage for secondary and tertiary care hospitalizations.

2. Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs): These centres deliver comprehensive primary healthcare services.
