Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born on 5 July 1960 in Hyderabad. His father was an income tax officer who also invested in stocks. Rakesh developed an interest in the stock market at a young age. He started his career as a stock trader with a capital of Rs 5,000 that he borrowed from his brother. Jhunjhunwala made his first big profit of Rs 5 lakh in 1986 by investing in Tata Tea. Between 1986 and 1989, he earned almost Rs 20–25 lakh profit by trading in stocks like Sesa Goa, Tata Power, Hindustan Lever, etc.
Later, he became a long-term investor and started buying shares of companies he believed had solid fundamentals and growth potential. He also set up his asset management firm, Rare Enterprises, which derived its name from the first two letters of his name and his wife’s name, Rekha.
Mr Jhunjhunwala died of a sudden cardiac arrest on 14 August 2022, leaving behind a fortune worth Rs 40,000 crores.
