Liquidity boost to improve core profitability at lenders

The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) first cut in the cash reserve ratio (CRR) since March 2020 is likely to provide much needed liquidity to the banking system, cooling off bulk deposit rates and lift core profitability of lenders by up to 5 basis points, bankers said.One basis point is a hundredth of a percentage point. The 50-basis point cut in CRR to 4% will release a total of ₹1.16 lakh cr.

RBI introduces new interest rate benchmark

The Reserve Bank of India introduces the Secured Overnight Rupee Rate (SORR), a new interest rate benchmark based on secured money market transactions, to improve credibility and representation of the overnight market funding rate, replacing the Mumbai Interbank Outright Rate (MIBOR) that has been in use since 1998.

Sensex, Nifty see sharp recovery after RBI MPC cuts CRR by 50 bps to 4%

The benchmark indices staged a sharp recovery on Friday, December 6, with the S&P BSE Sensex gaining over 400 points and the NSE Nifty50 nearing 24,800 levels. This was after the Reserve Bank of India decided to reduce the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 50 basis points to 4%, easing growth-related investor concerns. However, the central bank kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.5%.
