Government gold bond debt exceeds 1.5 trillion rupees

The government's outstanding debt on sovereign gold bonds has reached a record Rs 1.5 lakh crore, with 126 tonnes of outstanding SGBs valued at Rs 1,241 crore per tonne. Since 2017-18, the government's liability has increased by 930%. The Reserve Bank of India has limited gold imports to 150 odd tonnes since the SGB programme's launch, indirectly reducing pressure on the rupee exchange rates.
