India lags in CBAM preparedness efforts

India has not prepared significantly for EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), set to start January 1, 2026. CBAM will charge a carbon tariff on selected imports. Indian steel, aluminum, and cement exports to the EU fell 24.4% in FY25. GTRI suggested launching a comprehensive CBAM plan, including a Carbon Credit Trading Scheme and negotiating transition flexibilities with the EU.
