Asian Paints: Channel check takeaways on Loctite
Limited retail presence so far; Pidilite reigns supreme in adhesives
While concerns remain over (a) the lingering impact of demonetization on Pidilite’s
business, and (b) the possible dent on its margins if crude prices rise sharply, the threat
on account of Asian Paints’ distribution of
Loctite
appears to have receded, at least for
the time being.
In our ground reality check across 40 retail stores (hardware + paints) in Western India,
we found
Loctite
products only in 8 stores. Many of the stores had not even heard of the
brand and majority of the stores where the brand was available were Asian Paints
dealers.
The initial enthusiasm that the dealers selling the
Loctite
brand had in the beginning, with Asian Paints providing the first
shipments on a complimentary basis, has waned. With little advertisement and promotional support for
Loctite,
product
awareness is low and sales are slow.
Background
In March 2016, Asian Paints entered the retail segment of adhesives with a distribution arrangement with Henkel
Adhesives Technologies, Germany. Under this arrangement, Asian Paints began selling Henkel’s
Loctite
brand of
adhesives.
Loctite,
which competes against Pidilite in a few categories, was already available in India for many years.
The aim of the tie-up was to leverage Asian Paints’ distribution reach of over ~35,000 exclusive outlets as well as
wide presence in hardware stores, where Henkel does not have presence. Henkel continues to operate the B2B part
of the
Loctite
business.
With some commonality of distribution (many hardware stores also stock paints), there was a worry that the
Loctite
brand could take away some of the dominant market share that Pidilite has in its adhesives and sealants business.
After the announcement of the deal in March, Asian Paints had stated in its conference call in July that a wider
rollout of
Loctite
products will be complete in two quarters. Given that sufficient time has elapsed since the tie-up,
we thought a channel feedback would be useful. We visited 40 retail stores (hardware + paints) in Western India.
While this is admittedly a small sample to arrive at a final verdict, the takeaways were nevertheless revealing.
