The index committee chooses certain stocks to be included in the S&P BSE Sensex 50 index based on their market capitalisation and other factors. For each selected stock, the market capitalisation is derived by multiplying its current market price with the number of outstanding shares. Then, the value of the index is evaluated using the free-float market capitalisation-weighted methodology.
The weightage of each stock in the S%P BSE Sensex 50 index is derived based on its market capitalisation relative to the total market capitalisation of all the stocks in the index. As of January 2024, the weightage of prominent stocks in S&P BSE Sensex 50 is as follows:

The first step of stock selection for S&P BSE Sensex 50 involves selecting the top 50 stocks listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) as per their market capitalisation. Thereafter, the chosen stocks are assessed based on parameters such as their financial stability, liquidity, and sector representation. The S&P BSE Sensex 50 is reviewed periodically, and stocks are added or removed based on these parameters.
The closing price of the S&P BSE Sensex is determined using the weighted average of its constituent stocks. The closing prices of these stocks are recorded after market closing, and the free-float market capitalisation-weighted method is employed to derive the closing value of the index. Note that the closing value can change daily depending on the market circumstances.
The S&P BSE Sensex 50 measures the performance of the top 50 stocks listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). It’s not possible to buy and sell S&P BSE Sensex 50 units directly. However, you can invest directly in the S&P BSE Sensex 50 index stocks through a Demat account or through an index fund.
