Aadhar Card for Children - How to Apply for Aadhaar for Child

Aadhaar for children helps with school records, health schemes, and many government benefits. It also keeps your child’s identity details clean and safe in one place. You can apply for a newborn, a toddler, or a school-going child. For kids under 5 years, it is called Baal Aadhaar and the card is blue in color. Biometrics (fingerprints and iris) are not taken for children under 5. These are captured later at age 5, and must be updated again at age 15.

Key Points to Know (Age-wise)

  • 0–5 years (Baal Aadhaar): Blue card; child’s photo only; no biometrics.

  • 5–14 years: Photo + biometrics captured.

  • 15+ years: Mandatory biometric update to adult data.

  • Parent/Guardian Aadhaar must be given and linked.

  • Child must be physically present at enrolment.

Documents Checklist

For 0–5 years

  • Proof of Relationship (PoR): Birth certificate or hospital discharge/record.

  • Parent/Guardian Aadhaar (original for verification).

  • Parent’s address will be used for the child.

For 5–14 years

  • Any DoB proof (birth certificate/school record).

  • Identity/School ID (if available).

  • Parent/Guardian Aadhaar (for consent and address).

For 15+ years (update stage)

  • Child’s Aadhaar number (from earlier enrolment).

  • Biometrics will be re-captured. Carry a basic ID/DoB proof if asked.

Tip: Carry originals for verification and one set of photocopies.

Method 1: Enrol at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (Appointment + Visit)

Steps

  1. Book an appointment on the UIDAI website for the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (you can also walk in at many centres).

  2. Visit the centre with the child, documents, and parent/guardian Aadhaar.

  3. Fill the enrolment form for the child.

  4. For 0–5 years: Only a photo is taken; no fingerprints/iris.

  5. For 5–14 years: Photo + fingerprints + iris are captured.

  6. Verify details on the screen (child’s name, DoB, gender, address, parent link).

  7. You will get an acknowledgement slip with EID (Enrolment ID) and date/time.

  8. Keep the slip safe. Use it to track status and download e-Aadhaar.

Method 2: Newborn Enrolment at Hospital (If Available)

Some hospitals offer Aadhaar enrolment for newborns before discharge.

Steps

  1. Share birth details and parent’s Aadhaar with the hospital enrolment desk.

  2. Child’s photo is captured; parent’s Aadhaar is linked.

  3. You receive an acknowledgement slip with EID.

  4. Later, check status and download e-Aadhaar when ready.

  5. Remember to do the biometric update at age 5.

If your hospital does not offer this, use Method 1.

Method 3: School/Anganwadi/Camp Enrolment (Local Drives)

Many areas run enrolment camps in schools, anganwadis, or community halls.

Steps

  1. Confirm camp dates with the school/ward office.

  2. Carry documents and parent/guardian Aadhaar.

  3. Complete form + photo/biometrics as per age.

  4. Take the EID receipt and track the status later.

Mandatory Biometric Updates (Age 5 and Age 15)

  • At 5 years: Bring the child to any centre for biometric update (fingerprints + iris). Aadhaar number remains the same.

  • At 15 years: Do the second biometricupdate to capture adult biometrics.

  • These updates keep the Aadhaar active and accurate for life.

How to Check Status (After Enrolment)

  1. Open the UIDAI website and go to Check Aadhaar Status.

  2. Enter the EID (from your slip) with the date/time.

  3. Submit the OTP received on the registered mobile.

  4. If it shows generated, you can download e-Aadhaar.

How to Download e-Aadhaar

You can download using Aadhaar number, EID, or VID.

  1. Go to Download Aadhaar on the UIDAI site or use the mAadhaar app.

  2. Enter Aadhaar/EID/VID and solve the captcha.

  3. Verify with OTP sent to the registered mobile.

How to Correct a Mistake (Name/DoB/Photo/Address)

  • For small corrections (spelling/date), visit an Aadhaar centre with the child and carry supporting documents.

  • For address change, you can use parent’s updated address (carry proof and parent Aadhaar).

  • For photo re-capture, the child must be present.

  • Always check the update status after submission.

Safety & Good Practices

  • The child must be present at enrolment and biometric updates.

  • Do not share OTP with anyone.

  • Keep EID slip and later the Aadhaar letter/e-Aadhaar safe.

  • Use the same spelling of the child’s name across school and Aadhaar.

Enrolment is free; small fees may apply for some updates as per official rates at centres.
