What is the EPF passbook
The EPF passbook is a digital or online statement that shows all your contributions into the provident fund account and related transactions. It includes your monthly contributions (by you and your employer), interest earned, withdrawals or transfers and your current balance. Having this passbook helps you verify that your savings are being recorded correctly and stay informed about your retirement fund.
Activation & eligibility requirements
Before you can download or view your EPF passbook you need to fulfill some key prerequisites:
- You must have a valid Universal Account Number (UAN) issued by EPFO and your UAN must be activated.
- Your UAN should be linked (seeded) with Aadhaar, bank account and your mobile number so that you receive OTPs and notifications.
- The passbook facility is available only for active EPF accounts under EPFO (i.e., not applicable if your account has been settled or you belong to an exempted establishment where a private trust handles PF).
- After activation, the passbook data typically becomes available around 6 hours later.

- Control: If you spot any error (e.g., wrong amount or missing months) you can raise query with your employer or EPFO early.
- Planning: You get a clear view of your retirement savings growth — useful for deciding if you need to complement with other investments.
- Convenience: Because it is online, you can access it anytime, anywhere without waiting for a paper statement.

Some tips & things to keep in mind
- Make sure your UAN is activated and the KYC details (Aadhaar, bank, mobile) are verified well in advance.
- If you’ve changed jobs and have multiple Member IDs under same UAN, make sure you check each passbook.
- If your employer has not uploaded the contribution for a month, it may not reflect — check regularly.
- Download and save a copy of the passbook (e.g., once a year) for your personal records.
- If your account is under an exempted establishment (where the employer has its own PF trust) the EPFO online passbook may not be available; you’ll need to check with your employer.
- Use the passbook not just to check balance but also to confirm interest, and verify if your contributions match your payslip.
- Keep your login credentials, registered mobile number and email secure since your EPF account holds sensitive data.
