Nifty may test 25,800 in run-up to election results, says Prabhudas
Nifty could test levels of 25,810 in the run-up to the General Election 2024 results due on June 4, Prabhudas Lilladher has said in a note while advocating a buy-on-dips strategy. The brokerage has picked 17 stocks as its top bets spanning sectors including capital goods, infra, real estate, logistics/ports, EMS, hospitals, tourism, auto, new energy, e-commerce and telecom.

Mid-day Mood | Broader indices outperform Sensex, Nifty
Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty continued to trade in green on April 22 afternoon as investors bought across sectors. The cheer was visible in broader markets as well, with BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap indices outperforming frontline indices. Around noon, the Sensex was up 410.82 points, or 0.56 percent, at 73,499.15, and the Nifty was up 148 points, or 0.67 percent, at 22,295.

FIIs turn net short on Nifty, index futures, cut long bets
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) converted their bullish positions into bearish bets last week due to ongoing geopolitical concerns, turning from net long to net shorts in index futures. FPIs’ (Foreign Portfolio Investors) long-short ratio in NSE index futures flipped to 35 to 65 on Friday, from 56-to-44 a week earlier. Follow our market blog for live updates.

Bank Nifty to see short covering above 48,200 levels
Bank Nifty gained 300 points on April 22 to near the short-term resistance levels​, after ending down 2 percent for the week on April 19. In the early morning trade, the banking index was trading above 47,800, with strong resistance seen at 48,000 / 48,200. Crucial support stands at 47,000 on a closing basis. ICICI Securities suggests that "It is likely to close the April monthly series.

How is Nifty 50 calculated?

The value of NIFTY 50 is calculated using a float-adjusted and market capitalization-weighted methodology. In this approach, the index level reflects the total market value of stocks included in the index during a specific base period. Below is the formula for calculating the Nifty 50 index value:

Index Value = Current Market Value / Base Market Capital x 1000

The index calculation methodology also considers adjustments for corporate actions, including rights issues, stock splits, and other relevant factors.

Is F&O trading possible in Nifty 50?

Yes. You can trade in Nifty 50 through derivatives i.e. Futures and Options (F&O). The prices of these F&O contracts are linked to the value of the Nifty 50 index. The lot size for Nifty 50 for F&O trading is 50 and in multiples thereof.

How are stocks selected for Nifty 50?

Nifty 50 comprises 50 top representative stocks from 13 sectors listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Below are the eligibility criteria for stocks to be included in Nifty 50:

  • The company must be of Indian origin and registered with the NSE
  • The stock must possess high liquidity
  • It must have a trading frequency of 100% during the last six months
  • Nifty 50 index undergoes a periodic review every six months to remove stocks which do not meet the above criteria from the index and introduce new stocks. 

How is the closing price of Nifty 50 calculated?

The closing price of the Nifty 50 is calculated based on the weighted average market prices of the constituent stocks for the last 30 minutes before market closing, i.e., between 3 PM and 3:30 PM.

How can I trade in Nifty 50?

The Nifty 50 index depicts the performance of the top 50 stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Hence, you cannot buy or sell Nifty 50 units directly. Nevertheless, you can trade in Nifty 50 derivatives, such as Futures and Options (F&O). Alternatively, you can consider investing in index mutual funds, which are structured to replicate the performance of Nifty 50.
